The transmission is planetary gear system filled with transmission fluid. The fluid acts as lubricant and cooling agent. The gears grinding on each other and the heat cause breakdown and contamination (like burnt smelly frying oil in a restaurant). Regular fluid exchange ensures proper chemical make up and lubricating properties of the fluid and lengthens transmission life. Transmission rebuild or transmission replacement are some of the most expensive repairs and in the thousands of dollars.
